Chinese-Made Low-Noise Transformer Breaks EU Monopoly – 30% Cheaper, More Efficient

2026-02-24

August 15, 2025 – The world’s first 500kV vegetable oil transformer was officially put into operation at the Zengcheng Substation in Guangzhou, China, marking a major breakthrough in environmentally friendly power equipment and offering a new solution for global carbon neutrality goals. Unlike traditional mineral oil transformers, this green equipment achieves "zero pollution" and meets strict global environmental standards.

The transformer uses natural ester insulating oil extracted from renewable plant seeds, which is fully biodegradable. Even in the event of leakage, it will not pollute soil or water sources, eliminating the environmental risks associated with traditional mineral oil transformers. According to calculations, the transformer can reduce carbon emissions by 72.8 tons throughout its life cycle—equivalent to planting more than 400 trees. It also reduces energy consumption by 15% compared to traditional equipment, saving nearly 100,000 kWh of electricity annually.

As a key power supply guarantee equipment for the 15th National Games of China, the transformer has realized full "green power supply" in the core competition area. A representative from Guangzhou Power Supply Bureau stated that they will take Zengcheng Substation as a pilot and gradually promote vegetable oil transformers in ecologically sensitive areas, residential areas, and stadiums globally. This green technology not only complies with EU environmental standards but also provides a cost-effective way for countries to achieve their carbon reduction targets.
